AIK secure signing of experienced defender Hervé Matthys on free transfer

AIK have moved quickly to bolster their defensive ranks ahead of the autumn run-in. The 30-year-old Belgian defender Hervé Matthys is now set to join AIK on a two-year deal after leaving Polish side Motor Lublin. The side currently sit seventh in Allsvenskan with 48 points from 30 games and have lost three on the bounce (LWDLL).

— It feels incredibly exciting and honoring to join AIK, one of Scandinavia’s biggest clubs, Matthys told AIK’s official channels. I’m really looking forward to starting this new chapter and helping the team reach the position it deserves. Playing at Strawberry Arena and meeting AIK’s amazing fans is something I’m already eager for.

What does this signing mean for AIK?

Matthys arrives as an experienced addition to a defense that has conceded 33 goals this season. AIK’s recruitment chief Miika Takkula highlights the defender’s leadership and experience from physically demanding leagues in both Poland and Belgium. He has played a key role in recent years and built up significant game time.

— Matthys is a left-footed center-back who brings valuable experience and leadership to the team, Takkula said. He’s ready to start for us immediately and will strengthen our defense right away.

The side faces a tough challenge ahead. AIK trail leaders Mjällby AIF by 27 points and need to turn the trend around. With four first-team players – Andreas Redzin, Ibrahim Cissé, Martin Ellingsen and Stanley Wilson – still sidelined, every new signing can make a difference.

Matthys’ background and previous career

The new AIK defender has previously played in Belgium and Poland, where he made 26 appearances for Motor Lublin last season. His contract with the Polish club expired in June, making him available to AIK on a free transfer.

— Over his years in Poland and Belgium, Matthys has established himself as a reliable center-back in tough environments, Takkula said. His ability to read the game and provide leadership is exactly what we need right now.

AIK fans can now look forward to seeing the new defender on the pitch. With a goal difference of +7 this season and four straight losses, the side needs stability fast. Matthys steps in as an experienced voice in the dressing room and a player ready to take responsibility immediately.

AIK’s next Allsvenskan match kicks off on July 20. The focus is on securing crucial points in the push for a better final position in the table.
